Everything You Need To Know About SPF

By Viorela Coman, The Make-up Edit

Let's talk about the one skincare step that will do more for your skin — and your makeup — than any serum, facial or trending product ever could.

SPF.

I know, I know. You've heard it before. But stick with me, because once you understand why it matters and how to actually use it properly, it changes everything — including how your makeup looks and lasts.

Do You Actually Need SPF Every Day?

Short answer: yes.

The evidence is overwhelming. Daily sun protection reduces your risk of skin cancer, prevents sunburn, and — here's the one that gets my clients' attention — it is the single most effective anti-aging tool available to you. More than retinol. More than any expensive cream.

The key thing most people don't realise is that UV rays come in two forms: UVA and UVB.

UVA rays make up around 95% of the UV radiation that reaches us. They penetrate deeper into the skin, pass through clouds and glass, and are the primary cause of skin aging — think fine lines, loss of elasticity, and uneven tone.

UVB rays are the ones responsible for sunburn. Fewer get through the atmosphere, but those that do affect the upper layers of the skin and are linked to skin cancer.

You need protection from both. Every single day.

When Should You Wear It?

Ideally, all year round — but at minimum between March and October, or whenever the UV index hits 3 or above. The good news? You can check the UV index right on your phone's weather app.

If you have concerns about hyperpigmentation, spend a lot of time outdoors, or travel frequently, make it a daily non-negotiable regardless of the season. The simplest habit is a consistent one.

How To Choose The Right SPF For Your Skin

This is where a lot of people get stuck — and it's usually why they give up on SPF altogether. Here's what to look for:

On the bottle:

  • A UVA circle logo or 5-star UVA rating — this tells you you're protected against aging rays

  • An SPF rating for UVB protection — SPF 30 minimum, SPF 50 for higher-risk skin or sunny days

  • A 12M symbol — this means the product should be used within 12 months of opening

  • An expiry date — yes, SPF expires, and an out-of-date one won't protect you properly

For your skin type:

  • Oily skin? Look for a fluid formula, something oil-control or non-comedogenic

  • Dry skin? Go for a thicker, more hydrating cream version

  • Sensitive skin? Choose fragrance-free and consider a mineral SPF — these contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, have fewer ingredients, and are gentler on reactive skin

What About Vitamin D?

A common concern — and a fair one. Here's the truth: you don't need unprotected sun exposure to get your vitamin D. You'll still absorb sunlight through SPF, and evidence shows that's enough, particularly in summer months. If you're worried about deficiency in winter, a supplement is a safe and easy solution.

Apply SPF Properly + Top Tip That Changes Everything

Most people aren't using enough. The recommendation is half to a full teaspoon for face, neck and ears. Here's a brilliant technique that makes it so much easier:

Use two long fingers of SPF across your hand. Apply the first finger to your face and let it sink in fully. Then apply the second finger on top. Use whatever remains for the backs of your hands — one of the most sun-damaged and commonly forgotten areas.

Doing it in two layers means it doesn't feel heavy or greasy, and you're far less likely to miss any spots.

Reapplying SPF Over Makeup?

Yes, It's Possible

This is the question I get most from my clients: "How do I reapply SPF when I'm already wearing a full face?"

The answer is to pat, not rub. Rub the SPF into your fingertips first, then gently pat it around the face — don't drag or swipe. It soaks into the skin without disrupting your base underneath.

You can also use SPF sprays or compact powders with SPF as top-up options through the day — they won't give you the same level of protection as a proper application, but they're far better than nothing.

The most important thing is getting that first morning application right — in the right amount, before your makeup goes on.

Tinted SPF: Your New Best Friend

If you struggle with SPF under makeup, a tinted SPF is a game changer. It acts like a light foundation or BB cream — evening out the skin, reducing redness, covering minor imperfections — while giving you proper broad-spectrum sun protection.

Tinted versions also offer protection against visible light, which is particularly helpful if you struggle with post-acne marks or melasma.

SPF and Your Makeup

Here's something I always tell my clients: great makeup starts with great skin. And great skin starts with SPF.

When your skin is protected, hydrated and not fighting sun damage, your foundation sits better, your concealer blends more easily, and your overall finish looks more polished and healthy. It's not just about skincare — it directly impacts how your makeup performs.

What To Focus On By Decade

In your 20s: Prevention is everything. Daily SPF, no sunbeds, and building good habits now will pay dividends for the rest of your life.

In your 30s: Keep up the SPF and start to target specific concerns — fine lines, pigmentation, uneven tone. This is a good time to introduce retinol (always at night, always followed by SPF in the morning).

In your 40s and beyond: Maintain protection and focus on repair. A richer moisturiser, targeted ingredients like vitamin C and azelaic acid, and consistent SPF will keep your skin looking its best.

SPF is not optional. It's not just for summer. It's not something you skip because it makes your makeup look greasy (find the right one and it won't).

It is, without question, the most powerful thing you can do for your skin — and for how your makeup looks on top of it.

Start today. Your future self will thank you for it.
